PensionDanmark has introduced a biodiversity strategy, which will see it introduce a number of initiatives to contribute to the development of urban areas and properties having a clear focus on strengthening and conserving biodiversity and ecosystems.
Commenting, PensionDanmark project development director, Mia Manghezi, said: "We do not believe that the climate crisis can be solved without at the same time confronting the very serious loss of, among other things, plant and animal species, which constitute the global biodiversity crisis.
“We will therefore – with the launch of concrete and measurable efforts to strengthen biodiversity – commit ourselves to investing and building, so that we create the best possible space for diversity for plants, animals and microbiology, which we humans are so dependent on.”
Initially, PensionDanmark will apply strict requirements for selecting areas with low nature value, to limit damage to ecosystems when building developments. Next, there will be early involvement of, for example, biologists and landscape architects in the project development in order to preserve and strengthen natural qualities in the specific project.
In the construction phase, there will be, among other things, separate construction economics for nature-improving initiatives and high prioritisation of sustainable building materials that have the least possible negative effect on biodiversity through extraction, processing and freight.
In the long term, PensionDanmark wants the efforts to be extended beyond the construction of new properties.
