PensionDanmark invests in Danish quantum chips

PensionDanmark has invested DKK 75m in the Danish company Sparrow Quantum, which develops photonic quantum chips.

The investment is the largest in a capital raise of a total of DKK 164m, which includes investments from EIFO, Novo Holdings and existing investors: 2xN, LIFTT and the European Innovation Council.

Commenting, PensionDanmark CEO, Peter Stensgaard Mørch, said: "Quantum technology can open up a whole new world of solutions to complex problems, and the Danish research environment from which Sparrow Quantum originates has the potential to make Denmark an international frontrunner in the field.

“We therefore see a clear potential for the investment to provide an attractive return for our members' pension savings, while at the same time benefiting both the national economy and the Danish business community.”

In the autumn of 2024, PensionDanmark established an investment pool in growth companies in sectors where Denmark can build or maintain a prominent position.

This is the second investment from the pool, following an investment in Atom Computing last September.

Sparrow Quantum's core product is the Sparrow Core microchip, which can deliver single light particles, on-demand, with the highest precision, stability, and efficiency on the world market.

Quantum chips are central to the value chain for several different applications of quantum technology, and Sparrow Core is already being delivered to several manufacturers of quantum computers.

Sparrow Quantum founder and chief quantum officer, Peter Lodahl, commented: “With this investment, we can step up our research and development efforts and develop the proven research into real prototypes and products.

“We have already proven that we can deliver the world's leading deterministic single-photon source, but in a rapidly evolving field, we must continue to be extremely innovative to maintain our leading position.”

The proceeds from the capital raise will be used for the expansion of production facilities, further recruitment of specialists, and the development of a new generation of quantum chips.
