Dutch pension fund ABP is to partner with Noordzeker with the aim of investing directly in the large-scale generation and management of wind energy in the North Sea.
ABP, in partnership with Noordzeker, will tender for major projects to build wind farms in the North Sea.
The partnership will collaborate with knowledge institutions, companies, social organisations and the government.
The first offshore wind farm that Noordzeker will tender is Ijmuiden Ver, located 60km off the coast at Ijmuiden and around 200km squared in size.
The Dutch government will start registration at the end of 2023, and the winning tender is expected to be announced in the first half of 2024.
“By investing in wind energy in the North Sea, we want to contribute to sufficient and sustainably generated energy for everyone in the Netherlands,” said ABP board chairman, Harmen van Wijnen.
“Now and soon. We now see how important it is that we generate more 'own' energy in the Netherlands. That makes us less dependent on other countries, but it also gives us more influence on the costs of energy, which currently affect so many Dutch households.”
ABP noted that, when constructing the project, Noordzeder would take flora and fauna into account, aiming to strengthen biodiversity.
Furthermore, the project aims to contribute to Dutch employment and the strengthening of the ‘knowledge economy’.
ABP already has an interest in Dutch wind farms and several foreign wind farms.
