- Finnish earnings-related pension provider Ilmarinen has announced that more than half of its domestic real estate investments contribute to climate change mitigation.
Ilmarinen set a target to increase the share of taxonomy-compliant properties to over half of its total by 2025. Ilmarinen head of domestic real estate investments, Tomi Aimonen, said: “We achieved our goal last year, with a total of 56 per cent of properties meeting the taxonomy’s climate change mitigation assessment criteria.” The provider explained that European Union (EU) taxonomy is part of the European Union’s sustainable finance regulation, which aims to help market participants assess the sustainability of their business activities using jointly defined criteria. This, in turn, aims to accelerate investments in sustainable investment targets. The criteria for the real estate sector focus on energy efficiency, monitoring of emissions throughout a building's life cycle, and climate risk assessment. Compliance with the taxonomy also requires companies to meet social responsibility requirements or minimum safeguards in all their operations. Ilmarinen explained that the criteria for climate change mitigation have long been met at the real estate level, but is now reporting for the first time on compliance with the taxonomy
