Record-high three million Danes contributing to pensions

Just over 3 million Danes were paying into a pension in 2025, the first time pension participation has exceeded the milestone, according to figures from Insurance & Pension (I&P) Denmark.

Its analysis showed that 3,006,367 people were actively contributing to a pension scheme last year.

A further 1.2 million Danes have pension savings, with the majority being pensioners receiving retirement income.

“It is a fantastic milestone that for the first time we are now more than 3 million people paying into pensions,” commented I&P Denmark pension manager, Lotte Katrine Ravn.

“This says something about how broad pension savings are in Denmark. But the impressive figures should not become a sleeping pillow. It is still important to take an interest in what you have saved yourself.”

With Pension Day in Denmark being 25 October, I&P Denmark urged savers to check their pension fund regularly to ensure it meets their needs.

"For most people, retirement is something that runs automatically in the background, and that's how it should be," Katrine Ravn added.

“But our lives change along the way. That's why it's good to stop every now and then and see if your savings and insurance still suit your needs.

“Overall, we Danes have a lot of money set aside for our future. This is a great strength for Danish society. But in the end, it is not the large social figures that are interesting to the individual. What is crucial is whether your pension gives you the opportunities and security you want.”
