News in brief: 7 March

- A timber-framed office building, the Katajanokka Pier, which is owned by Finnish earnings-related pension provider Varma, has won an international award for timber architecture.

The award aims to highlight excellence in timber architecture in Europe and Varma’s property was announced as the winner at the 14th Forum International Bois Construction (FBC) in Paris, France.

“The Katajanokka Pier has been an exceptional project for us in terms of location, building materials and architecture. The timber-framed, modern facility fits well with our investment portfolio, our strategy and also our environmental values. We are particularly pleased that the Katajanokka Pier is being honoured with an award highlighting European excellence in timber architecture," Varma head of real estate investments, Sampsa Ratia, said.

- A new building project being undertaken by Denmark’s Industriens Pension, Egedal Municipality, 2L Projektudvikling and turnkey contractor HHM has begun in Egedal, northwest of Copenhagen.

The project will create a new urban area with 171 homes and a daycare centre. The new district, Landskabsbyen, will be built in the area immediately north of Egedal Station, and the plan is to develop the district in stages with new homes and recreational areas.

-Almost a third of UK savers expect to continue working once they reach retirement age, according to a survey by Smart Pension.

The research surveyed over 2,500 Smart Pension members and found that those on lower incomes were most at risk. More people earning between £10,000 and £25,000 (40 per cent) and £25,000 and £50,000 (31 per cent) believed they would need to continue working in retirement, compared to 17 per cent of those earning over £150,000.

- Finnish earnings-related pension provider Ilmarinen will hold its annual general meeting on Wednesday, 26 March.

The meeting will take place at 9am at Ilmarinen’s offices in Porkkalankatu 1, Helsinki. Shareholders must register for the general meeting no later than 19 March 2025 at 16.00, and more information about the contents of the meeting is available on Ilmarinen’s website.
