Klaus Stiefermann has been elected as the new chairperson of PensionsEurope, succeeding Jacques van Dijken.
Stiefermann has been a member of PensionsEurope’s board for 20 years, serving as vice chairperson for four years previously. He has also held the role of managing director at the German occupational pensions association, Arbeitsgemeinschaft für betriebliche Altersversorgung (Aba), since 1999.
PensionsEurope also confirmed that Carolina Fernandez has been elected as vice-chairperson, alongside Ann Verlinden.
Commenting on his appointment, Stiefermann said: “Together with Carolina and Ann, I look forward to working with CEO Matti Leppälä and his team, as well as with all members of PensionsEurope.
"Together, we will advocate for more funded pensions vis-à-vis the EU institutions and in the Member States”.
The news comes amid a significant time of change for the European pensions industry, as the European Commission has just confirmed its plans to amend the IORP II Directive and the Pan-European Personal Pension (PEPP) regulation.
Stiefermann suggested that this pension package shows that the cooperation between national associations and PensionsEurope is "more important than ever".
"In the coming weeks, we will carefully examine whether the proposals are suitable to meet the European Commission’s objective," he added.
