Danica Pension has paid a fine of DKK 100,000 to the Danish State Prosecutor for Serious Economic and International Crime (Søik), concluding the case of discrimination against pregnant women in connection with Danica Health Insurance.
Søik issued the fine after it found that Danica Pension had insurance terms that discriminated against pregnant women, violating the Insurance Equal Treatment Act.
In July 2021, the Danish Supervisory Authority reported several Danish insurance and pension companies, including Danica Pension, to the police for violating sections 8 and 18b of the act.
Danica Pension noted that there was an error in its insurance conditions, which meant that the health insurance did not cover pregnant women in the same way as other customers until autumn 2020.
Once it became aware of the situation, Danica Pension rectified the discrimination in the insurance conditions, and contacted and offered compensation to all affected customers who may have been “inadvertently” notified an unfair refusal of coverage.
“We have made a regrettable mistake, which we have apologised to the women concerned, and we would like to repeat that apology here,” Danica Pension stated.
“It has by no means been a deliberate act and we rectified the error as soon as possible when we became aware of it.”
