ABP partners with SSE Renewables and Naturalis on biodiversity project

The Netherlands’ ABP has partnered with SSE Renewables and Naturalis Biodiversity Center to work together on biodiversity at sea as part of the Noordzeker initiative.

Noordzeker is a renewable energy initiative launched by ABP with the vision to generate the power of the North Sea for large-scale wind energy production. As part of the collaboration, the three partners are competing for the tender of the IJmuiden Ver wind energy area.

The Dutch government wants much more wind energy produced in the Netherlands, especially in the North Sea.

“With Noordzeker we have the ambition to operate a large wind farm in the North Sea. With this, we are able to not only ensure a good pension, but also affordable and clean energy for our participants and the Netherlands," ABP chairman, Harmen van Wijnen, said.

“That is why Noordzeker and Naturalis Biodiversity Center are joining forces to work on biodiversity because we want wind energy that is good for people and nature."

ABP sees the collaboration with Naturalis as important for Noordzeker. The Dutch government, which ultimately determines who can develop the IJmuiden Ver wind farm, sets high standards for sustainability and ecology (how different animals and plants work together). ABP believes that Naturalis can help to provide maximum protection for the animals and plants in and above the North Sea.

Naturalis deputy general director, Maaike van de Kamp-Romijn, said: “There is still much unknown about life in and above the sea. We also see that biodiversity in the Netherlands is not going well. In Noordzeker we see a partnership that takes biodiversity seriously. We look forward to working together in the IJmuiden Ver wind farm in the near future."
