The Taskforce on Nature‑related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) has published the first updates to its recommendations and to its Locate, Evaluate, Assess, and Prepare (LEAP) assessment approach since their publication in September 2023.
This concludes TNFD’s work developing technical guidance to support the assessment and disclosure activities of report preparers and report users.
The recommendations, which outline the conceptual approach of the TNFD and the 14 recommended disclosures, have been updated to incorporate new guidance on environmental crime and final disclosure indicators and metrics related to Invasive Alien Species (IAS) and the state of nature.
The environmental crime update is related to recommended disclosures Governance A and B, Strategy A, B and D, Risk and Impact Management A(i), A(ii), B and C, and Metrics and Targets A, B and C.
Meanwhile, the LEAP assessment features several updates and improvements, based on market feedback.
These include guidance on state of nature measurement in the TNFD framework, invasive alien species measurement in the TNFD framework; nature-related risk assessment; nature-related opportunities identification and assessment; considerations of environmental crime throughout a LEAP assessment; integrating nature in transition planning; multi-stakeholder landscape and seascape approaches; assessments for financial institutions’ portfolios; and interoperability with Science Based Targets Network guidance for science-based targets.
In terms of take-up, the TNFD reported that 836 organisations, representing over USD 26trn in assets under management (AUM) among the financial institutions, have now committed to corporate reporting aligned to the TNFD recommended disclosures.
This represents a 14 per cent increase since COP30 in November 2025 and over USD 26tn in AUM among the financial institutions acknowledged as TNFD Adopters, a 19 per cent increase year-on-year.
The publicly listed companies now represent over USD 10.5trn in market capitalisation, an increase of 12 per cent since COP30.
Going forward, the taskforce will focus its efforts on continuing to support the work of the International Sustainability Standards Board, the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) and the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) as they draw on the TNFD recommendations and guidance.
Alongside this, it will continue its market capacity-building efforts to support corporates and financial institutions globally.
