PFZW makes progress on calls to implement environmentally friendly agriculture

Dutch pension fund Pensioenfonds Zorg en Welzijn (PFZW) has welcomed the news that retail and wholesale company Ahold Delhaize will develop an approach to regenerative agriculture by 2027 at the latest, although it argued that more speed and clarity is still needed.

During a shareholder meeting, PFZW urged Ahold Delhaize to take "quick steps" towards regenerative agriculture.

The Dutch pension fund argued that this method of farming not only prevented damage but also helped to restore nature.

It said that this could be done, for example, by using natural compost, ponds, and marshes to retain rainwater better.

The pension fund explained that regenerative agriculture also offered various advantages for farmers, such as increasing the resilience of their land to pests and diseases.

PFZW asked Ahold for concrete plans and measurable goals, emphasising that agriculture could only become sustainable with "clear steps."

In response, during the shareholders' meeting, Ahold Delhaize promised to develop an approach to regenerative agriculture by 2027 at the latest.

PFZW praised this as a "step in the right direction," but insisted on more speed and clarity.

"We are also happy to think along with them in developing this approach," the fund continued.

"We use our vote to encourage companies to make better choices for people and the environment. In this way, we limit long-term risks to ensure a good pension and contribute to a more sustainable world," PFZW added.
